Declan looks around to see if there's anyone close and, realizing there's no impressionable children in their direct earshot, he tips his head down to whisper into her hair. Bloody hell, her shampoo smells amazing and considering it's just island standard, he suspects it's got more to do with it being Kate than any particular product.

"If you'd let me, I'd have those legs of yours wrapped 'round me while I fucked you right out in the water with the tide coming in. It's all I can do to keep from shoving you up against every available surface on this bloody rock."

Kate laughs, just a little. "Talking is the last thing I do when I'm freaked out." But she rubs at his chest again, fingertips make a little pale patch where they push the blood away from the surface of his skin. "But I do come to you. You know I do."

Maybe she's really not cut out for this relationship thing. Only fucking one person she can do, but... "I'm just used to taking care of myself, Declan. I'm never going to stop doing that. I can't."

"And you shouldn't. There isn't always a guarantee I'm going to be here. I want to be, absolutely, but a woman should stand on her own two feet," Declan says firmly. He thinks he's probably a moot point to argue it with her, though, since she agrees.

"I just want to be safe for you, that's all."

At the thought of him not being here, Kate tenses. "I don't want to think about that or talk about that. You not being here. I can take care of myself but I don't want to be stuck on this damned island with Tesla and his PYT, and Magnus and Will making cow eyes at each other and me."

She wraps her arm tighter around him and tangles their legs to pull herself closer. "You're the best thing about this place. Okay?"

It touches him that she's so fierce about it, how much she needs him on the island, and Declan doesn't even let his mind wander to the possibility of it being just because of the island. He just won't.

"Love, I'm not going anywhere, even if they strap missiles to my back and launch me into the blue."

"That's not going to happen." If Kate sounds sure of it, she is. She smirks slightly and rubs her fingers against his spine. "They'd have to get past me and I gotta say, I don't like their odds."

He can take care of himself as much as she can, but that doesn't mean he's not hers and she won't make paste out of anyone who tries to hurt him.

"Unstoppable force," Declan says softly. "That's my Katie."

It's so fond and there's so much affection in it that for a moment, he tenses, wondering if it's too much and she'll end up tensing too.

Kate's breath catches, but she lets it go and lifts her head to kiss him. "It's okay, babe," she murmurs at him and sucks at his bottom lip. "Just don't go announcing it on the island radio or putting ads on the bulletin board."

"Mum's the word, Katie," Declan says, intentionally using the pet name to get a rise out of her.

"I'm glad I know you're going to stay the night tonight, at least. We'll take tomorrow when it gets here."
